Google Maps could get AR walking navigation in future

With the new features, Maps is expected to become more helpful and personal as the service will now offer more customised suggestions and recommendations for users based on the location.

To help provide for these changing needs, the Google Maps team have worked to integrate Google Maps with the smartphone camera.

There's also a new For You tab in the app that Google describes in further detail below.

When you check out a particular area on the map, you'll see dining, event, and activity options based on the area you're looking at.

When you tap on any food or drink venue you will get a number that suggests how likely you are to enjoy the place - this is called your "match". Machine learning will be used to calculate the score, based on information about the business, your food and drink preferences, places you've been, and previous ratings you've given.

Adding the essence of a social network, Google Maps will soon incorporate a new group planning feature that lets users create shareable shortlists making it easier to coordinate plans with friends and family. Besides directions, the mode also helps identify nearby places, so you have a better feel for the neighborhood. Google Maps say to go South on High Street, but how do you know which way is South, and if it is an unfamiliar location, how do you know which one is High Street?

All of these new features will be rolling out to Android and iOS users over the coming months.
