Spotify Removes R. Kelly From Its Playlists After Sexual Misconduct Allegations

The r&b singer has been accused of sexual violence over the years by multiple women, allegations he's repeatedly denied. But we seem to be at a moment where the spotlight is back on the R&B star, and people are wondering how to make him actually face a outcome.

"It may be a cultural milestone", Larry Miller, clinical music associate professor and director of the music business program at NYU Steinhardt, said of Spotify's decision.

"We are removing R. Kelly's music from all Spotify owned and operated playlists and algorithmic recommendations such as Discover Weekly", Spotify told Billboard in a statement.

Spotify's announcement regarding R. Kelly's music came as the company debuted a new policy regarding "hate content and hateful conduct". Oh boy do we have ideas.

When an artist has done something harmful or hateful, like an act of sexual violence, Spotify will change the way it supports or promotes that artist on its service. On top of that, a call-to-action from the Time's Up movement, particularly their branch WOC, to join the #MuteRKelly campaign has given the campaign a major boost in visibility. And while voting with your dollar isn't a substitute for actual justice, it's not nothing. (Kelly and XXXTentacion, whose real name is Jahseh Onfroy, have each denied the respective claims).

Others actually supported the rapper's take on Spotify, with one user writing "If they keep taking music out of people who have been accused or convicted of anything they are not going to have any music to play".

Ford shuts down F-150 production after plant fire
Burkie Morris of the UAW wrote that "the company doesn't know when or for how long we will be down", in a letter to the members. Even with heavy demand, the production stoppage would likely have to last for multiple weeks to dent those numbers.

Sweeping the top-seeded Raptors in the second round only provided further indication Cleveland had moved past these issues. It was the only blemish on an otherwise impressive series sweep for the Cavs.

Takeda secures Shire bid for $62.11bn
Takeda's acquisition is part of its strategy to expand internationally and add to its cancer, stomach and brain drug portfolios. Takeda's offer excludes Shire's oncology business-which Shire on April 16 agreed to sell to Servier for $2.4 billion .

So Billboard has confirmed that starting today, listeners will no longer find songs by R. Kelly on Spotify's playlists, whether they're editorially curated or created algorithmically. It is acting based on false and unproven allegations.

"We believe in openness, diversity, tolerance and respect, and we want to promote those values through music and the creative arts", Spotify's website reads.

The move from Spotify follows a move from the Time's Up campaign to "mute" R. Kelly.

At the same time, this opens SPOTIFY up to charges of favoritism, as music by MICHAEL JACKSON, CHRIS BROWN, and up-and-coming rock artists such as BRAND NEW, PWR BTTM and HEDLEY (whose members have been accused in recent months of sexual misconduct) have not been impacted.

It's pretty hard to defend singer R. Kelly with his questionable history with alleged underage girls and the accusations that he allegedly has a sex cult of young women.
