Province spending $1.2M on ad campaign in support of pipeline

Al Gore has thrown his support behind opponents of a contentious Canadian pipeline project and condemned the planned expansion as federal officials in Canada scramble to ensure it goes ahead.

Alberta Premier Rachel Notley says she's confident talks aimed at getting construction of the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion back on track will be successful before a May 31 deadline.

To date, the Albertan government has spent $1.29 million on the nationwide advertising campaign, with about $700,000 of that dedicated to advertising in B.C.

"When those kinds of comments are made, and they clearly demonstrate a lack of understanding about the overall issue and all the facts, I just think it's starting to fall on a larger and larger number of deaf ears", Notley said Friday at the grand opening of a new maternity unit at the Peter Lougheed Centre in Calgary.

Notley said Ottawa is in "very serious and determined" discussions with Kinder Morgan with a goal of resuming construction this summer and eliminating "a critical mass of uncertainty".

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said Trans Mountain is in the "national interest" and his government is exploring all legislative and financial means of pushing it through.

On Tuesday, Mr. Robertson told Bloomberg that the proposed Trans Mountain pipeline expansion will never go ahead "based on the resistance on the ground".

Over the last week billboards started going up in cities like Vancouver, Victoria, Kelowna and Kamloops.

Robertson's comments "show a tremendous inability to look beyond the most local of borders", Notley said.

Natural Resources Canada said in 2015 the country's oil and gas industry had a direct and indirect contribution to the nominal gross domestic product of 7.7 per cent. On Wednesday, Kinder Morgan shareholders voted in favour of a non-binding proposal that would require audits of the company's environmental and legal risks. The Federal Court of Appeal refused to do so - and they did so without providing any reasons. The Liberal government is also seeking intervener status on the case.

The Alberta legislature is in the final stages of debate on Bill 12, which will give Energy Minister Marg McCuaig-Boyd power to throttle gasoline shipments to British Columbia.
