County has dismal voter turnout for Primary

Mitchell County's voter turnout is up from the June 2016 primary, during which 622 of 10,958 registered voters cast ballots (5.68 percent).

As of last week, there are 8,378 registered Republicans, up 442 from the 2016 Primary Election; 3626 registered Democrats, down 403 from the 2016 Primary Election; 2,591 registered nonpartisan voters, up 181 from the 2016 election and 139 registered Libertarian voters, up 71 from 2016.

"Turnout was much better than expected", said Fayette County Board of Elections Director Beth Ann Snyder. The office located at 965 Trade Drive, near Martin Luther King Boulevard and Cheyenne Avenue, and on the first floor of the County Government Center at 500 South Grand Central Parkway in downtown will be open from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. on that day to accommodate anyone needing to drop off applications.

More than 13,500 people voted in a Democratic primary in which Courtney Tritch defeated John Roberson and Tommy Schrader to run for a House seat held by Republican Jim Banks.

Grassy Creek led the county in ballots cast with 1,242.

Voters are also encouraged to help save money by choosing to receive their sample ballot by email instead of regular mail.
