Delhi-NCR hit by sudden dust storm, rain; flights grounded

The sudden change of weather in Delhi forced airport authorities to divert at least 10 domestic flights, an official said.

High-speed winds and lightning devastated many villages, bringing down homes and leaving dozens injured.

Metro services, too, were affected.

The inclement weather interrupted the launch of a 140 kWp rooftop solar plant at IP Extension attended by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

At least 38 people were killed in sprawling Uttar Pradesh state, which has a population of more than 210 million people, said government spokesman Avnish Awasthi. The subsequent effect on the plains of northern India is also predicted. "This thunderstorm will continue for the next 48 to 72 hours", said IMD scientist Charan Singh.

Meanwhile, six persons died of lightning in separate incidents in Andhra Pradesh's Srikakulam district.

The storm, with wind speeds of up to 70 km per hour also crippled Metro services in at least three places on the sprawling network. We had forecast that the weather will be adverse for two-three days.
