USA diplomat involved in deadly crash leaves Pakistan

A US State Department spokesperson also confirmed to AFP that "the American diplomat who was involved in a tragic auto accident on April 7 in Islamabad has departed Pakistan".

Hall was briefly arrested on April 7 after running a red light and ramming a motorcycle with his vehicle, killing a Pakistani national and wounding two others. But as a furore here grew over the accident, he was barred from leaving the country, and Pakistani officials said he faced criminal charges.

Over the weekend, Pakistan refused to allow Hall to fly back home in a special plane sent by his country.

The departure of U.S. military attache Colonel Joseph Emanuel Hall was reported by Pakistani officials and confirmed by the U.S. State Department on May 14.

Diplomatic sources further confirmed that Colonel Hall was a U.S. diplomat who held absolute immunity as per the Vienna Convention of 1972 and the privileges Pakistan extends to diplomats. Pakistan's criminal, civil, and administrative laws are not applicable to the USA envoy.

Before the announcement, President Donald Trump had complained on Twitter that Pakistan had "given us nothing but lies & deceit" and accused it of providing "safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan".
