Japan's prime minister on Friday warned North Korean leader Kim Jong Un that Japan will not provide major economic assistance unless the North resolves the issue of Japanese citizens it abducted decades ago.

Pompeo, who has met with Kim twice in the past five weeks, described his conversations with the North Korean leader as "good" and "substantive", and he stressed the benefits that can come to the nation's impoverished economy is it commits to getting rid of its nuclear weapons.

Recently, North Korea has made a decision to return three American citizens of Korean origin earlier convicted for espionage and hostile actions to the United States. He brought home three American prisoners freed by Kim in what Pompeo said was an important gesture that helped pave the way for the meeting.

The North said it plans to invite journalists from the United States, South Korea, China, Russia and Britain to inspect the process.

Pompeo stated that every one three worldwide locations - the US, South Korea and North Korea - share the identical imaginative and prescient for way forward for the Korean peninsula.

The United States and North Korea are technically still at war - a stop-gap armistice ended the brutal three-year Korean war in 1953 and around 30,000 American troops remain in neighboring South Korea, which the USA supported in the conflict.

The top US diplomat said the release of three American detainees set the conditions for a successful summit between the USA and North Korea. During the talks, Kim Jong-un announced his intentions to shut down a nuclear test site in Punggye-ri.

"I feel we've a shared imaginative and prescient for what we hope, when this course of is accomplished, the Korean peninsula appears like, I feel we've a very good understanding and I feel there's full settlement of what the last word aims are", Pompeo stated, including that, "we started to work via the modalities of how we obtain that".

To the U.S., that means the North giving up the nuclear weapons it has already built. The majority of people in North Korea live in poverty.

Journalists asked Pompeo what such a denuclearization would look like and if it meant carrying out inspections in North Korean nuclear plants. "I think there's a complete agreement about what the ultimate objectives are", he said.
