White House Eliminates A Top Cybersecurity Post

"Today's actions continue an effort to empower National Security Council Senior Directors". The NSC's cyber team has two senior directors, the email said, and thus "cyber coordination is already a core capability".

According to an email sent to National Security Council employees seen by Politico, the decision is part of an effort to "streamline authority" for the senior directors who lead most NSC teams.

Formerly of NSA, Rob Joyce left his position as cyber coordinator May 11 and will once again serve within the federal surveillance agency, according to Politico. "Streamlining management will improve efficiency, reduce bureaucracy and increase accountability", NSC spokesman Robert Palladino said in a statement replying to a question about the role's elimination. The cyber coordinator role, set up during the Obama administration, was tasked with harmonising the government's approach to cybersecurity and digital warfare.

Cyber policy experts and other officials don't see this as any form of improvement.

Not everyone agrees, however, as Senate Intelligence ranking member Mark Warner (D-VA) tweeted "We also need to articulate a clear cyber doctrine".

When Joyce first announced his departure last month, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Joyce would "stay on as needed to provide continuity and facilitate the transition with his replacement".

The US government has killed off a top government position for cyber policy, the media were reporting earlier this week.

Former Homeland Security Adviser Tom Bossert, Jocye's boss, oversaw the cybersecurity program and was pushed out of the White House on Bolton's second day on the job.
