25-Year-Old Texan Posed as High Schooler to Play Basketball

Police say a 25-year-old man posed as a 17-year-old Hurricane Harvey evacuee at Dallas high schools for nine months in order to compete on the basketball court.

When Sidney Bouvier Gilstrap-Portley made a decision to have his own fast times at Hillcrest High School in Dallas, he got no such permission from the administration, and simply claimed to be a 17-year-old Hurricane Harvey refugee in order to join the basketball team.

Gilstrap-Portley, who first enrolled at Dallas' Skyline High School in August, moved to Hillcrest two months later, WFAA confirmed.

High school basketball coaches in Texas District 11-5A selected Hillcrest High School's Rashun Richardson as the offensive player of the year.

Gilstrap-Portley was discovered when a former coach identified him as a player at North Mesquite High School earlier this decade.

"I knew the young man". "It's unbelievable to me that he could get away with this", said the girl's mother, who spoke anonymously to the Dallas Morning News.

We recently became aware of a student enrolled at our school under false pretenses claiming to be a displaced Hurricane Harvey victim.

School officials, meanwhile, notified parents of the weird incident in a letter Monday and vowed to review the district's policies, KXAS reports.

He was booked into Dallas County Jail, charged with tampering with government records Friday and has since bonded out.

The 25-year old resurfaced October 27 when he enrolled at Hillcrest and played on the basketball team. "I never had any problems out of him. And he took advantage of this opportunity to enroll in Hillcrest", Dallas ISD Superintendent Michael Hinojosa said.

The mother of the 14-year-old classmate Gilstrap-Portley allegedly dated told the Morning News her daughter said she did not have a sexual relationship with him.

"He fooled us. He did", said Christopher Bayer, the principal at Hillcrest High. Years ago, he was an "average" player at North Mesquite High School, where he graduated in 2011.

"I'm upset, frustrated, angry and sad at the same time", she told the newspaper.

So, they let him attend Skyline High School, then transferred him to Hillcrest High School.

'People need to know.

The parents also wondered wondering why the school didn't tell them about it before the news did and how the man was able to share the hallways and classrooms with their kids.
