India Elections: What Does Karnataka State Win Mean For PM Modi?

India Elections: What Does Karnataka State Win Mean For PM Modi?

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was on Wednesday asked to form a government in Karnataka, sparking criticism from the opposition who said Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party did not win enough seats to take power.

The JD (S) and the Congress had moved the Supreme Court after governor Vajubhai Vala invited the BJP to form the government first, seeking a stay on the swearing-in, calling it unconstitutional. During the high-voltage hearing, which lasted from 2.11 am to 5.28 am, the top court made it clear that the swearing-in and government formation would be subject to the final outcome of the case.

"In this specific instance, when the BJP as the single largest party is unable to get the support of other parties and MLAs, the Governor has to consider the claim of the post-election JD-S-Congress alliance", it said. To dodge defection attempts in the elections gone by, Congress MLAs have been taken to the Eagleton resort while the JD (S) MLAs are staying at the Shangri-La hotel in Bengaluru.

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Thursday said that democracy has been brazenly manipulated, mutilated and massacred in Karnataka.

After a protest outside the state assembly against the Governor's decision, Congress legislators were taken to separate resorts to ensure BJP couldn't reach out to them. It was also then that Yeddyurappa had allegedly poached four JD (S) MLAs and three Congress MLAs, triggering bypolls in the concerned constituencies in December that year.

Amid high political drama, the Supreme Court early on Thursday didn't stop B.S. Yeddyurappa from taking oath as Karnataka's new Chief Minister but the legal battle for the BJP leader and his party is far from over.

Even police officers also said that they had inputs about the MLAs possible arrival to Kochi.

Speaking on the issue, senior party leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said that the party has full faith in the Supreme Court that it will not repeat the Karnataka Governor's mistake.

Following a three-hour hearing that began around midnight, the Supreme Court rejected the Congress claim that it already had a majority by joining hands with the smaller Janata Dal (Secular) party. He also alleged that BJP leaders are constantly calling their MLAs and their families, reports ANI. "We expect the BJP to convince the necessary number of legislators to switch sides and allow the BJP to prove its majority in the next 15 days", he said.

But nearly on cue, the Congress high command in New Delhi reacted swiftly to move an urgent petition seeking a hearing in the night to try and prevent the swearing-in.
