Injured Payet ruled out of World Cup with France

Injured Payet ruled out of World Cup with France

Payet suffered a muscle injury during Wednesday's Europa League final, which Marseille lost 3-0 to Atletico Madrid.

France coach Didier Deschamps who captained the team to World Cup glory on home soil in 98′ was able to pick from an embarrassment of riches, as he bids to win the trophy for the second time.

Unveiling his squad on French TV, Deschamps said he had no choice but to leave out Payet.

"He was a serious candidate for a place in the 23 but for this kind of injury it's usually three weeks of recovery", Deschamps told reporters. But as it is muscular, there is a significant risk of further issues.

That doesn't even factor in Benzema, who has been shunned by the national team due to off-field issues since 2015, Marseille star Dimitri Payet, who was sadly injured in his team's last game of the season, ruling him out for the Cup, or Aymeric Laporte, the defender who Manchester City paid £57 million ($102.6 AUD) for just a few months ago.

France will play in Group C along with Australia, Peru and Denmark.

Giroud is selected as one of Deschamps' strikers having featured regularly in qualifying and scored four goals as France topped their group.
