Mountain Bike Ride Turns Deadly After Cougar Attack in Washington State

After it charged, one even smacked the cougar with his bike, and it ran off.

It wasn't enough, authorities said.

"The fact that it stayed in close proximity with these folks and attacked, and stayed with them is highly, highly unusual", said Capt. Alan Myers with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

"It sounds like they were just riding bikes when one of the victims hears a scream from his partner and sees they're being chased by a cougar", Myers said.

Abbott said deputies shot at the mountain lion and scared it away.

The King County Sheriff's Office said the riders did nothing to provoke the mountain lion. "But something was wrong with this cougar".

One man is dead and another is injured after they were attacked by a cougar Saturday while mountain biking in Washington State, police said.

Experts Say There Was "Something Wrong" With The Cougar Who Killed a Seattle Cyclist

Captian Myers described the three-year-old cat as "emaciated", saying that it weighed 100 pounds, compared to the usual 140 pounds for a male cougar of that age.

Soon after, Fish and Wildlife dogs arrived and tracked down the cougar, who was in a tree 80 feet from Brooks' body, Abbott said. But as the men caught their breath and were getting back on the bicycles, the animal returned and fastened its mouth on the man's head, said Kings County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Ryan Abbott.

SJ Brooks, 32, was killed and Isaac Sederbaum, 31, was seriously injured by the mountain lion on Sunday. He rode for 2 miles before he could get a cellphone signal to call 911. Officials said he told them his friend ran into the woods while he was being attacked.

Fish and Wildlife officials eventually shot and killed the cat.

When the two cyclists first encountered the cougar, they attempted to scare the animal off by making noise and swinging a bike at it - which is what wildlife officials recommend - but the animal persisted. A necropsy will try to determine why the animal was underweight. Now, it allows 250 to be hunted in 50 designated zones.

Beausoleil was the lead author in a 2013 research paper that began, "The history of cougar (Puma concolor) management in Washington and for the western United States as a whole has been dominated by political and special interest agendas, creating a challenge for wildlife managers".

Because running and rapid movements can trigger the animal's prey drive, don't run. As he looked back, he saw the cougar dragging Brooks into the woods, Abbott said. Keep your eyes on the animal and become more assertive if it doesn't back off.
