New Ebola Cases, Deaths Reported in Congo

Two new deaths from the Ebola virus and seven new confirmed cases have been recorded in the Democratic Republic of Congo [DRC], the country's health ministry said on Tuesday.

"Staff and volunteers are promoting accurate and timely information that helps people to take precautions and reduce their risk of contracting or transmitting the virus", Overcamp told CNA.

The discovery of at least one case in Mbandaka, a densely populated port city on the eastern bank of the Congo River, has raised concerns about the potential for rapid spread of the disease, which had previously been limited to a remote area in the rain forest of Congo's Equateur province. "Everyone must adhere to this vaccination campaign with the goal of protection".

In DRC, Ground Zero for the latest Ebola outbreak, authorities are also working to ensure an adequate response to the outbreak.

"Ebola is a risky disease that can easily slip over national and continental borders. We are grateful for the support of our partners in making this possible", he said.

"It's concerning that we now have cases of Ebola in an urban center, but we're much better placed to deal with this outbreak than we were in 2014", WHO's director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreysus, said at the United Nations health agency's annual meeting in Geneva on Monday.

The World Health Organization has warned that the chances of Ebola spreading within Congo is "very high", according to the Associated Press.

The nurse died in the town of Bikoro, where the DRC's Ministry of Health first identified cases of Ebola earlier this month.

Karsten Voigt of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has been training volunteers specifically on how to handle bodies during burials.

"Frontline healthcare workers and other persons with potential exposure to EVD - including but not limited to laboratory workers, surveillance teams and people responsible for safe and dignified burials - will also receive the vaccine", the World Health Organization said.
