Investigation Finds Russian Missile Shot Down Flight MH17

Investigation Finds Russian Missile Shot Down Flight MH17

Almost four years after the plane was shot down over eastern Ukraine while en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, the Dutch-led team of experts say evidence shows "the missile had come from a unit based in western Russia", reports the BBC.

"We got acquainted with the statements made at today's press conference by representatives of the worldwide investigation team on probing the crash of the Malaysian MH17 Boeing over Ukraine on July 17, 2014", the defense ministry stated.

The missile that downed a Malaysian plane on flight MH17 above Ukraine in 2014, when 298 people died, was sacked by Russian Federation, according to investigators.

The missile, fired from a mobile launcher, struck the Boeing 777 on July 17, 2014 over an area of Ukraine controlled by pro-Russian separatists.

But the global investigative team said that its findings stood independently and that it possessed additional information to buttress its conclusions that it would announce only in eventual courtroom proceedings.

Wilbert Paulissen of the Dutch National Police said the missile was from the Russian military's 53rd anti-aircraft missile brigade based in the Russian city of Kursk.

A large convoy of some 50 vehicles including six BUK-TELAR missile systems left the Kursk base on June 23, 2014, the investigators said.

The Netherlands said the process of holding the Russian government legally responsible is separate from a criminal investigation into the specific suspects who shot the missile. The Bellingcat report used pictures and data from open sources, showing the Buk system on both sides of the border and claiming it was the same.

The prosecutor added the findings raises questions as to whether the brigade was "actively involved in downing MH17".

He said investigators were not yet ready to identify individual suspects publicly or to issue indictments.

The plane carried 193 Dutch, 43 Malaysians, 27 Australians, 12 Indonesians, 10 British, four Belgians, four Germans, three Filipinos, and one Canadian and one Kiwi.

Westerbeke also called members of the public with knowledge about "control and use" of the missile to help the investigation, saying JIT "no longer wants to turn exclusively to the Russian authorities to obtain information on this subject". Investigators on Thursday said that had narrowed the list down to several dozen. Russian bloggers, journalists, aviation experts, and volunteers united in the group to highlight significant flaws and inaccuracies in the Bellingcat version of the tragedy.

Multiple witnesses saw the missile launcher arrive in Ukraine from Russian Federation on public roads, and The Associated Press reported its deployment into the war zone before the Malaysia Airlines jet was shot down. "All the credible evidence points in that direction", the letter said.

At a news conference in the Netherlands on Thursday, the team announced the findings of its investigation, showing photos of the wrecked plane.
