F1 champ Lewis Hamilton thrilled as Monaco returns grid girls

Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton has backed the use of "grid girls" for this weekend's Monaco Grand Prix, saying it was "a lovely thing" that the role would return after being scrapped by the sport's owners in January.

The Australian saw off the Dutchman by 0.194 seconds in the second session on Thursday afternoon as both enjoyed a comfortable margin over their rivals.

Hamilton may have lucked into his Baku victory - leaders Sebastian Vettel locked his breaks on a late move, and Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas suffered a late puncture - but the Englishman was in a league of his own in Spain as he blew away the opposition in frighteningly ominous style.

Hamilton was 0.123secs behind but had a messy session and appeared to have more pace in his Mercedes. He is a four-time world champion and I doubt he is cheap'.

Michel Boeri, the president of Monaco's Automobile Club, disagreed with the decision.

"It's been an OK day, we didn't suffer any damage which is a good thing", said Hamilton.

"I think women are the most handsome thing in the world", Hamilton told reporters Wednesday, after organizers confirmed TAG Heuer would continue its longstanding promotional arrangement with the race. As expected, we struggled a little bit more.

"The vehicle felt good in some places, in others it felt bad", said Hamilton.

'I imagine that a delay can only involve money, ' Horner, the Red Bull team principal, said. "I am not that happy yet in the second and last sector".

Sainz, who also took to the Turn 1 escape road during the session but rejoined without damaging his auto, and Williams rookie Sergey Sirotkin completed the top 10.

But when asked if he thinks Raikkonen will stay in 2019, Vettel answered: "I don't know".

Ricciardo topped both practice sessions ahead of Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen.

Hamilton then hit back with a time less than a tenth faster despite encountering a Williams just as he approached the final corner.

It was an nearly identical crash to one Verstappen suffered two years ago, and gives Red Bull significant work to do to get the auto ready for qualifying. It was an almost-identical shunt to his 2016 Monaco crash. "I'm going to have to work for it, but I'm ready to win", Ricciardo told reporters.
