Fiat Chrysler Is Recalling 4.8 Million Vehicles Over Cruise Control Flaw

Fiat Chrysler is recalling 4.8 million U.S. vehicles over a defect that could prevent drivers from turning off cruise control.

Owners have been told not to use the function until they get software upgrades.

Australian's who drive Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) Jeep Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, Chrysler 300 and Dodge Journey models are being warned to exercise caution when using the cruise control system.

The models include the popular Ram pickup trucks of all sizes, the Jeep Cherokee and the Chrysler Pacifica minivan.

The automaker said that the cruise control acceleration can still be overpowered by braking.

According to a complaint filed with NHTSA on March 2, the driver of an Avis rental auto in Olathe, Kansas was traveling at 70 miles per hour (110 km per hour) with the cruise control engaged when the driver reported the wipers turned on by themselves, dashboard instrumentation dials went to zero and the cruise control would not disengage. Models in other countries also are affected. It says drivers can potentially get around the problem by using the breaks constantly, to the point where the vehicle is able to stop, which would allow cars to be placed in park and cruise control to be disabled.

It warned owners, including those outside the United States, not to use the function until they get software upgrades.
