Honda Debuts Civic Type R Pickup Concept

Honda Debuts Civic Type R Pickup Concept

Following the one-off CR-V Roadster, Honda's United Kingdom team has done it again with the debut of the equally as weird Civic Type R pickup truck concept.

Displayed at the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) annual Test Day, the vehicle-internally known as "Project P"-was built after-hours by Honda's United Kingdom voluntary race team, Synchro Motorsport, at the company's Swindon plant, where all hatchback Civics are assembled". BMW once turned an E30 M3 into a pickup and used it to transport engineering bits and bobs for the better part of twenty years.

Built at Honda's Swindon factory, the ute has been modified and developed from a standard Civic Type-R road vehicle finished in Rallye Red.

A guide to the Irish abortion referendum

Until recently, Honda enthusiasts in the United States couldn't buy the Civic Type R because Honda didn't sell the Civic in its hatchback form over there, and the Type R has always been a hatchback-only model. That means a 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 making 306 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque with a six-speed manual. Honda says the truck can zip to 62 miles per hour in less than 6 seconds and reach a top speed of over 165 miles per hour.

Alyn James, project lead for the Type R Pickup, had this to say about their latest project "We have a special projects division at the factory in Swindon and this project was a fantastic opportunity for the team to show just what their creative minds could do". It's hard not to pay attention to the Rallye Red pickup, which, despite its diamond-plate bed and new roll bars, managed to keep its slick-and-now-movable rear wing. Honda may also bring it to the Nürburgring in a bid to hold the title of "fastest front-wheel drive pick-up", something that probably won't be too hard to take. In this picture, we can see Honda's lawnmower products in the rear.
