His body fluids have been sent to the National Institute of Virology in Pune which is the only agency in the country to certify whether it was a case of Nipah virus or not.

According to a report by NDTV, the soldier identified as Seenu Prasad, hailed from Kerala and was posted at Fort William in Kolkata. However, some of his relatives said he visited the medical college hospital recently to meet a relative of his friend.

The deadly Nipah virus has so far claimed at least 14 lives, mostly in Kerala.

Kerala has warned people traveling to the state and urged travelers to be extra cautious while visiting Kozhikode, Malappuram, Wayanad and Kannur districts.

It must be noted that the Nipah virus is spread by fruit bats and this causes communicable disease. There have been cases of transmission of the disease among humans and between humans and animals as well.
