Another Indian state reports Nipah virus death, fanning fears of spread

Besides, 1,353 persons who had interacted with the affected before the confirmation of the disease are under observation.

Apart from this, another person has been tested positive for the infection in Kozhikode, PTI said.

So far, a total of 196 samples have been tested for Nipah, of which 18 have tested positive. The objective was to avoid crowding of people, the official said.

The measures were announced on Friday in a statement by the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), which explained it has taken a number of precautionary measures in co-operation with the entities concerned in Qatar regarding the Nipah Virus cases in Kozhikode and Malappuram districts of Kerala. Bats "may only be infectious for a week or two, and then they clear the virus and they're no longer infectious", said Jonathan Epstein, a veterinarian and epidemiologist at EcoHealth Alliance, New York, who's an expert on Nipah outbreaks, a report published in The Wire said.

Madhusudhanan (55) of Nellikode in Kozhikode district died tonight, according to health department sources. Kerala Health Director RL Saritha said that the state had not received any information about the death of an army man who is suspected to have died of Nipah in Kolkata earlier this week.

Besides, a team of doctors from the Manipal and Thiruvananthapuram Medical colleges are also evaluating the situation. She was shifted to Pariyaram medical college five days later.

The advisory, meanwhile, says people don't need to be scared - as it has only a local occurrence in two Kerala districts only - but asked people to be cautious while consuming these fruits.

The virus has so far claimed 16 lives in Kerala's northern districts.

After a superintendent of Kozhikode district court complex died due to Nipah, the district bar association had asked the authorities to stop the functioning of the district court for the time being.
