Childhood cancer survivors can face sleep problems

Researchers at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and several other hospitals in the U.S., Canada and Norway studied data on 15,450 adult cancer survivors, finding vigorous exercise in early adulthood over the course of eight years lowered their risk of death.

Childhood cancer survivors are more likely to experience sleep problems and daytime sleepiness as adults which may result in greater likelihood of persistent or worsened emotional distress, preliminary results of a study suggests.

It is a day when those in the beauty and related industries in all 50 states offer complimentary services to all men, women and children who are cancer survivors, regardless of the type of cancer or when they were diagnosed. After adjustment for age, survivors were 31% more likely to report daytime sleepiness and 26% more likely to have poor sleep efficiency. This can lead to greater likelihood of the persistent or worsened emotional distress.

Healthy lifestyle behaviors that include regular exercise have been associated with substantial reductions in mortality, but it wasn't known whether that applies to adult survivors of childhood cancer.

"This is an important day for all those affected by childhood cancer - kids who are now battling cancer, survivors, and their loved ones", Capito said. The study also involved 380 siblings with a mean age of 33 years. Emotional functioning was assessed about 8 years before and 2 years after the sleep survey. Daniel said that sleep is quite amenable to behavioral interventions. "Efforts that improve sleep may improve both health and quality of life in long-term childhood cancer survivors", said Daniel.
