Trump falsely accuses Canada of burning down White House

"I know we're going to have some very, very frank conversations quite clearly around the table", Mr Trudeau told Global TV, adding he would convey Canada's displeasure over the tariffs personally when he meets Mr Trump in Quebec.

According to CNN, the two world leaders were discussing trade when Prime Minister Justin Trudeau asked for an explanation of how tariffs are considered a national security issue.

Macron - who had formed an unlikely bond with Trump - declined to characterize his last conversation with the USA leader, but unnamed White House insiders told U.S. media it was "terrible". But it was British troops that burned down the White House during the war.

But Canada was a British colony at the time and did not become a separate nation until Confederation in 1867.

Asked if the president's comment was received as a joke, one source told CNN: "To the degree one can ever take what is said as a joke".

"The impact on Canada and ultimately on workers in the USA won't be a laughing matter", one source told the network.

Both Trudeau and Freeland have appeared on major American television networks in the past week to criticize the USA tariffs as "unacceptable" and "illegal".

Trump economic advisor Larry Kudlow, however, framed the trade spat as a "family quarrel" which he said would be "worked out", while adding that his administration "will do what is necessary to protect the United States, its businesses and its workforce".

"And I would just say to all of Canada's American friends - and there are so many - seriously?"

Every other G7 country plans on launching retaliatory tariffs against United States goods. "You can't, among allies in this global context, start a trade war".

Macron said he would do everything in his power to help Trudeau's presidency of the G7 to succeed and produce a joint statement on Saturday that can be signed by all seven members.

The other G7 members - Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom - are likely to bash Trump's recent tariffs and trade restrictions.

Trump's surprise tariffs forced Canadian officials to adopt more blunt language while NAFTA talks between the U.S., Canada and Mexico continue.

He and Macron also noted that the tariffs would hurt American workers.

It was the understanding of Canadians officials at the time that this would satisfy the Trump administration and allow for Canada to receive a permanent exemption from tariffs.

US President Donald Trump should not prevent the other participants of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) from keeping the agreement, nor should he push Iran out of the nuclear deal, French President Emmanuel Macron said in a press briefing.

Macron's comments come as the leaders of the G7 countries are preparing to meet at a trade summit in Canada, which analysts expect will turn into a showdown on trade deals, given Trump's repeated insistence that the United States has the "worst trade deals ever made".
