Britain's Queen Elizabeth, 92, had eye surgery last month

Instead of taking it easy post-surgery however, the Queen carried on with her demanding schedule and didn't cancel a single engagement.

Queen Elizabeth has undergone surgery to remove a cataract from her eye, Buckingham Palace has announced.

The Queen was out today at Westminster Abbey with her son Prince Charles to open the The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Galleries - a collection from the Abbey which dates from the 10th century.

Her husband Prince Philip will then celebrate his 97th birthday on Sunday.

The palace made the announcement Friday after the queen was seen wearing sunglasses at a number of recent public engagements.

The Press Association news agency said Britain's longest-reigning monarch, who has been on the throne for more than 66 years, underwent the surgery, the most common operation performed in the United Kingdom, at London's private King Edward VII hospital.

During the operation, which takes between 30 and 45 minutes, the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with a plastic one. These usually become bigger over time, causing blurry, misty vision and eventually blindness, if left untreated.

Next week, Queen Elizabeth will travel by royal train to Cheshire, accompanied by Meghan Markle.
