Tennessee woman arrested for transporting children in pet kennels

"Many have inquired about a viral video from Saturday that shows two children being transported in pet kennels", the department said.

Leimome Cheeks, 62, has been arrested and charged on two counts of child endangerment for the disturbing incident that took place in Memphis on Saturday evening.

Authorities said the suspect admitted that she drove about 35 minutes - from Memphis to Collierville, Tenn. - with two children in dog kennels in the back.

"I'm just so sad for the babies".

Cheeks told police that she placed the children in the kennels, but she made sure to check on them periodically.

Neighbors are trying to piece together the thought behind her actions.

A Tennessee grandmother was caught allegedly transporting her grandchildren in dog kennels in the trunk of her vehicle is now in the dog house. They say she's a woman of faith and a very nice lady. I only met her like once maybe twice. Something is going on with her. WATN said it attempted to contact Cheeks at her home over the weekend, but no one answered the door.

The video was filmed by a concerned citizen who said he to happened be in the right place at the right when he witnessed the unusual sight.

The local resident who captured the footage told WREG News he was glad he was able to catch Cheeks in the act and encourages others to do the same if they are faced with an unsavoury situation.

WREG tried reaching family for comment, but had not heard back at last check. Their grandmother is scheduled to be in court Monday morning at 9 a.m.
