Emissions cheat declared in 774K Mercedes-Benz vehicles

Germany's Transport Ministry said on Monday that 774,000 Mercedes-Benz vehicles in Europe had been found to contain unauthorized software defeat devices and ordered Daimler to recall more than 200,000 cars in Germany.

A court in Stuttgart, where Daimler is based, issued a search warrant against the company to investigate excess emissions on more than one million cars sold between 2008 and 2016 in Europe and the U.S., according to German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung.

"The government will order 238 000 Daimler vehicles to be immediately recalled Germany-wide because of unauthorised defeat devices", the ministry said in a statement. The diesel Mercedes C-Class C220d and GLC 220d, as well as the Vito 119CDI, are said to be affected, with German authorities demanding the recall after "illegal switch-off devices" were detected.

This is specifically linked to two functions of the engine control in Mercedes-Benz Vito vans.

The announcement came a day after Germany's Bild am Sonntag newspaper reported that the national road vehicle authority KBA had found five illegal switch-off devices in Daimler diesels.

Germany can only order the recall of vehicles within its own borders, or of those vehicles issued with a pan-European road-worthiness certification via German authorities.

Tesla’s ‘Autopilot’ is getting an upgrade
Musk said the autopilot issue during lane-merging is better in the current software and will be fully fixed in the August update. Tesla's website now features a section on the Autopilot page called, "Full Self-Driving Capability".

KBA believes Daimler's Euro 6 diesels are emitting polluting gases in excess of what the regulations say and the exhaust systems of those cars are featuring manipulating control software.

The company is reportedly confident it can bring the vehicles back into compliance via software update.

The auto maker said in a statement: 'The functions are part of a complex emission control system created to ensure robust emission control in different driving conditions and over the life of a vehicle.

Daimler said in a statement only that it "confirmed the recall" and added that "open legal questions will be clarified in appeal proceedings".

Ellinghorst estimated the cost to Daimler to be less than 100 million euros.
