Jeff Horn makes 147 pounds on second attempt, Crawford 146.5 lbs

IN a tragic day for Australian boxing Jeff Horn lost his WBO world welterweight title to brash American Terence Crawford by ninth round stoppage in Las Vegas. Crawford landed 155 of 367 punches in the fight with a 42 percent accuracy rate.

Terence Crawford, left, and Jeff Horn, of Australia. "I suppose someone has dodgied up the scales for us to be bang on or even underweight", Horn said.

The two unbeaten fighters meet Saturday night for Horn's welterweight title in a fight that offers an intriguing matchup of brawler versus boxer in a division that is suddenly getting a lot of attention in boxing. He could have a noteworthy weight advantage once their fight starts Saturday night, but Crawford has declined to speculate about how much weight he thinks he'll add by rehydrating between Friday's weigh-in and the opening bell.

Referee Robert Byrd stopped the fight with 27 seconds to go in the ninth, intervening as Horn withstood a battering from Crawford.

The challenger had adopted a brash approach in the lead-up to the bout having had plenty handed to him on a platter - he got the horsehair gloves he wanted, he got the original bout postponed for a hand injury Horn's camp labelled "fake", and he is staying in a lavish multi-level apartment at the MGM Grand.

In the five years since I first met him at Pallara State School where the Fighting Schoolteacher was trying to keep the lid on a gaggle of boisterous nine-year-olds, I have never seen him in a bad mood, never heard him raise his voice, never heard him badmouth anyone. From round to round, the blood poured, affecting his vision and Pedraza's vision in a fight nearly too close to call for everybody who could see it. "Crawford looked a little smug but that will all be gone by round one". He stuck his tongue out and wound up with some punches as he nailed Horn with heavy shots from all angles, especially straight lefts, in what was easy work.

"Right now we're going to go home, we're going to enjoy this win".

I've seen him in a hospital bed facing career-threatening surgery.

Pedraza (24-1, 12 KOs) won the 10 rounds, 96-94 on each card, with some stubborn resilience, a few big uppercuts and respect for Mexican Antonio Moran (22-3, 15 KOs), who fought tenaciously throughout the 10 rounds despite a huge gash that he suffered at the bridge of his nose early in the second. But he sure didn't appear to have any issues with the right hand, which he used liberally.

"One thing with this ESPN platform is we have the dates", Arum said. "He did everything we expected him to do". "We're going to have "Bud" fight as many times as he and [trainer Brian McIntyre] want. It's up to him how busy he wants to be".

"Jeff's got to make that and use that as an advantage", Fenech said.

Horn said he wasn't stressed at all by what happened.

"Crawford was just sharp in there", Ruston said.

The more Horn pressures forward, even with his unconventional style, the more he opens himself up to punishing counter shots. "I'm fine", he said. But, money talks in boxing and Pacquiao is still a big name, so don't be surprised if this fight happens should Manny get by hard hitting Lucas Matthysse on July 14. We are ready for the fight of our life and Terence better be ready too because we mean business.

The welterweight division was on notice.
