Nadal and Del Potro dazzle with duel at the net

Midway through the opening set, Nadal's aqua T-shirt was so soaked with sweat it stuck to him.

The three-hour and 50-minute match, which put Del Potro in the French Open's last-four for the second time in his career, was suspended on Wednesday due to the weather, reported Efe. But the hard-hitting del Potro did little to take advantage, struggling with a hip injury that seemed to get further aggravated as the match progressed.

"I think that was my chance of the match", Del Potro said of the ninth game.

There will be much to ponder though for Nadal and coach Carlos Moya as Schwartzman still looked capable of registering a first win against Nadal at the sixth attempt.

One of those victories came against Thiem in last year's semi-final and was, if anything, more comprehensive than this one.

Anything can happen in a Grand Slam final.

Talking about Sharapova, in the press conference after the quarterfinal match lost, she also returned to Serena Williams' comments on some parts of her book: "It would have been unusual for me not to talk about someone I've played against so many years". All have been on clay, and Nadal leads 6-3, including 2-0 in Paris, beating Thiem in the first round in 2014 and the semifinals a year ago.

What is definitely true: Thiem has never been to a Grand Slam final until now.

Kerber, a former U.S. and Australian Ooen champion and ex-number one is in her second quarter-final in Paris, six years after her first. The Argentine, who will be returning to the top-four of ATP rankings after a four-year gap, has dropped only two sets in the ongoing tournament.

"It's tough to speak now", said an emotional Del Potro.

"Against Dominic Thiem‚ he is top 10‚ and today all the people were for me".

"He's playing with big confidence, winning the Lyon Open before Roland Garros and playing some great matches here". "I can say a lot of things, but the easiest answer and the real answer is to play well".

Nadal faces Austrian Dominic Thiem in Sunday's final.

The world No. 8 made history of his own Friday, becoming the second Austrian male to advance to a grand slam final after the hard-nosed 1995 French Open champion, Thomas Muster.

"The big key was the second-set tiebreak because it was very close and I saved I think three set points", Thiem said after the match. The American asked the Spaniard to bandy with him, but Nadal did not accept: "I asked him: Why did not you want to play with me?" However, he faced a match point at 30-40 but Nadal lost it with n unforced backhand error.

Thiem is the only man to defeat 10-time French Open champion Nadal on clay this season.

Thiem‚ who was playing in his third successive French Open semi-final‚ admitted the second set had been a nervy encounter after needing five set points to get through it. He stormed through the next five games to take the set and move back into the lead.
