In the meantime, fewer workers are needed to staff a 24-hour operations center and officials are reducing checkpoints, Magno said. A large flow of lava from a fissure that has already destroyed hundreds of homes is continuing to enter the ocean at Kapoho Bay.

But as he drew closer, he realized it was a 1-year-old boy running along the highway's right lane, just steps away from passing cars. He responded quickly, parking his squad vehicle to block traffic and pulling the little boy to safety, according to WGN. However, the boy keeps running, forcing Mannino into a full sprint to catch up. Mannino then tells dispatchers he would begin looking for the boy's parents. No one was hurt in the incident.

Naperville Police said the little boy "escaped his mother's watchful eye" and got out of his house.

The boy's mother arrived moments after Mannino saved him, WGN reports.
