New York City FC have announced that Pep Guardiola's right-hand man at Manchester City, Domènec Torrent, has replaced Patrick Vieira as head coach at the club.

Announcing Vieira's departure on their official website, New York City were quick to thank the former World Cup victor for his endeavours.

There was no immediate word from New York City FC on Vieira's replacement.

NYCFC (8-3-4, 28 points) now sit second in the Eastern Conference standings, two points behind Atlanta United.

"Through its chairman Jean-Pierre Rivere, OGC Nice has announced it was looking for a coach with the ability to continue to play flowing football, bring on young players and take the risk of having them evolve while bringing a winning spirit to the table".

The ex-Manchester City, Inter Milan and Juventus midfielder was in his third season as head coach of New York City.

After more than 20 years away, former Arsenal and France star Patrick Vieira, is returning to Ligue 1 to take the reins at Nice where he was unveiled as manager on Monday. His contract will run until the end of the 2020 season.

"Though I have enjoyed a wonderful 11 years working alongside my colleague and close friend Pep Guardiola - it has always been my ambition to manage a team again and I really couldn't have hoped for a better opportunity than at this football club", Torrent told NYCFC's official website.

"A smooth transition was certainly a priority, particularly for a group of players who have had an excellent campaign so far", he said. "I know Domenec can't wait to get started".

The Frenchman earned 107 caps for his nation and was part of the team that won the 1998 World Cup and the European Championship two years later.
