Mohammad Arif Noori, spokesman for the provincial governor in Ghazni, said the Taliban fighters hit the first checkpoint of a district governor house's compound that left five Afghan security forces dead and 26 others injured, including the district governor.

Bedar said that Taliban had successfully pushed into the district's centre.

A week ago, a motorcycle suicide bomber killed 14 people near a gathering of Muslim clerics in the Afghan capital after they had issued an edict against suicide bombings, officials said, in the latest in a series of attacks to hit Kabul.

"The battle is ongoing as we have asked for immediate reinforcements".

Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility, its AMAQ news agency said, without providing any evidence.

A suicide bomber struck outside a government ministry in the Afghan capital on Monday, killing at least 12 people and wounding 31 others days before the start of a holiday cease-fire with the Taliban.

"Woman, children and employees of the ministry are among the victims", Najib Danish, spokesman for the interior ministry, told Reuters.

At least eight Afghan security officials have been killed in the ongoing clashes, two officials said.

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa held a meeting with Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani during his Kabul visit, said an Inter-Services Public Relations press statement.

"The Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan announces a ceasefire from the 27th of Ramadan until the fifth day of Eid-ul-Fitr following the historic ruling (Fatwa) of the Afghan Ulema", said Ghani.

Pakistan has always been accused of supporting the Taliban and providing safe haven to its leaders - charges Islamabad denies.

Talking to Commander RSM, the COAS said that Pakistan desires that US/ NATO forces must succeed and leave behind a peaceful and stable Afghanistan, the ISPR mentioned.

The attack comes as security has deteriorated in the city during recent months ahead of elections scheduled for October.
