Cohen parting ways with lawyers as widening federal probe continues

Cohen's legal team will stick with him until a review of more than 3.7 million documents seized from Cohen's offices and home in April is complete, the Times and Wall Street Journal reported.

The law firm representing Michael Cohen is leaving the case, a possible sign that President Trump's personal attorney may flip and cooperate with federal prosecutors, according to a media report Wednesday.

Only 162 of the hundreds of thousands of materials seized in the raid have been declared to have attorney-client protection.

But as the investigation widens, and with Cohen's legal team in turmoil, the chances increase that Cohen could cooperate with prosecutors.

It wasn't clear what prompted the change or who would take over. Stormy Daniels, the adult film star who claims she had sex with Trump in 2006 and was then paid $130,000 to keep quiet about it, has also asked to join the case.

Cohen has been represented since 2017 by Stephen Ryan, a Washington lawyer initially hired to prepare him for congressional testimony about alleged Russian interference in the presidential election. This development, which is believed to be imminent, will likely hit the White House, family members, staffers and counsels hard. But after that review is finished, he will seek new legal counsel, the people familiar with his case said.
