Trump Kim summit: United States president lauds deal despite scepticism

Well, so far, Trump and South Korean President Moon Jae-in are pretty much in line.

Without military drills, the United States forces in South Korea would wither and fail to meet readiness standards. Details of the document are not yet clear.

Al Jazeera's Wayne Hay, reporting from Seoul, said that there is not much sign in the declaration from Kim "that he is willing to give up much, if not anything". Trump tweeted. "No more rocket launches, nuclear testing or research! Thank you to Chairman Kim, our day together was historic!"

After almost five hours of unprecedented talks between Trump and Kim on Tuesday, the two leaders signed a document in which Kim "reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula" and the USA agreed to "provide security guarantees".

Tuesday's summit in Singapore was front page news on Wednesday, with full-page spreads of photos of Mr Kim and Mr Trump and details about the meeting. "The most important, hard part of this security issue is for the U.S. and North Korea to sit down to find a way to resolution via equal talks", Wang said. However, they've long wanted a meeting with a U.S. president. Trump's total sidelining of North Korea's infamous human rights abuses has also caused concern. Jung said Trump led the group to believe that he would confront the leadership in Pyongyang about the widespread abuses in the country. And how can the USA make sure Kim will keep his commitments?

Ordinary North Koreans consistently voice unequivocal support for the leadership when speaking to foreign media. "Trying to reason with someone like that is like trying to hand feed a shark".

The spectacle was a major coup for an isolated and heavily sanctioned regime that has long craved worldwide legitimacy.

Italy refused because some politicians there don't want the country to take in as many migrants as it has in the past. The Spanish government said it would accept the ship at the port of Valencia.

"Kim Jong-un and Trump had the shared recognition to the effect that it is important to abide by the principle of step-by-step and simultaneous action in achieving peace, stability and denuclearization of the Korean peninsula", the report said. -South Korea military exercises will resume if North Korea stops negotiating in good faith over its nuclear program.

He said he anticipated the next discussion with North Korea would take place "fairly quickly after we return to our home countries".

Using the military exercises as a massive negotiating chip in exchange for the North denuclearizing is a pretty orthodox policy proposal, but it stunned nearly everybody that Trump seemed to be giving this away for free after his meeting.

While the military is a huge expenditure for the United States, and military drills are costly, their financial cost is comparatively minor compared to the diplomatic bargaining chip they represented.

"The U.S. -South Korea joint exercises and U.S. forces in South Korea play significant roles for the security in East Asia", Japanese Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera told reporters Wednesday.

Independent experts say the North could have enough fissile material for anywhere between about a dozen and 60 nuclear bombs. The five-hour summit did give Trump and Kim a chance to express optimism and make of show of their new relationship. DPRK is the abbreviation for the North's formal name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

The Kremlin welcomed the summit as the start of direct dialogue and said such meetings "help reduce tensions on the peninsula". In his media briefing in Singapore on Tuesday, Trump mentioned ending the drills, which he described - in language similar to that used by North Korea - as "provocative", saying it would save the the USA money. "But the substance needs to be followed up", Akira Kawasaki, from the ICAN anti-nuclear group.
