Two Australians die after falling from a cliff in Portugal

The captain of the port of Cascais, 30 kilometres west of Lisbon, said he believed the couple fell while trying to take a selfie.

The Australian man and British woman who died after falling off a 30-metre wall while taking a selfie have been identified.

Authorities think the pair reached out to grab the cellphone, lost their balance and fell 98 feet to the rocky beach below.

"Everything seems to indicate that the fall happened when they were probably trying to take a selfie", he said.

'It seems they dropped their mobile phone and fell down while leaning over to retrieve it'.

The bodies of the woman in her 30s and the man in his 40s were found on the sand by a beach cleaner on Tuesday morning, Portuguese newspaper Correio de Manha reported.

His mother said yesterday the couple had left Australia in January on a holiday and had attended a friend's wedding in Portugal in recent weeks.

The pair died after falling from the cliff top at Pescadores Beach in Ericeira, Portugal.

"The Department has been in contact with the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office regarding the other person who died in the incident", DFAT said in a statement on Wednesday.
