World Cup Returning to US After North American Bid Beats Morocco

The 2026 World Cup will be the first tournament played in the expanded 48-team format, up from the current 32 countries.

The United States will co-host the soccer World Cup in 2026, after winning a joint bid with Mexico and Canada to hold the sport's biggest competition.

The joint bid won 134 votes (67%) out of the 203 entitled to vote with Morocco bagging 65 (33%) when voting took place in Moscow on Wednesday, a day ahead of the Russia World Cup 2018.

If we're spitballing, it's hard to imagine the United States being forced to qualify for a World Cup in which it's the predominant host.

Shanks is gearing up for this year's tournament in Moscow, which will be broadcast in the U.S.by Fox Sports, and will take place in 11 cities across Russian Federation. The White House provided U.S. Soccer president Carlos Cordeiro with three separate letters that Cordeiro showed to delegates, containing guarantees from Trump that any immigration policies relating to predominantly Muslim countries would impose no restriction affecting the tournament. In the end it wasn't enough, and Americans fans can look forward to the return of soccer's greatest event in what can only be seen as a massive boost for the domestic game.

Trudeau told reporters in Ottawa: "It's an opportunity to bring the world together and highlight how well things work between Canada, Mexico and the United States".

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is coming to North America.

The successful bid also comes as President Donald Trump is engaged in public feuds with the leaders of both those countries. "The merits of the bid, we feel we have a compelling proposal". "Why should we be supporting these countries when they don't support us", had a major effect on the eleven African countries that refused to vote for Morocco's bid. The New York Times reported it had seen three letters written by Trump to Federation Internationale de Football Association president Infantino, promising that his hardline stance on visas would not affect visitors to the World Cup. Trudeau responded by saying that Canadians would "not be pushed around".

A total of 23 venues - three in Mexico, three in Canada, 17 in the United States - have made the final shortlist that will be considered for the tournament. Thus far, cities in contention to host are New York/New Jersey, Seattle, Boston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Denver, Miami, Houston, Dallas, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Nashville, Orlando, San Francisco/San Jose, and Cincinnati. The two highest-ranked teams according to FIFA's rankings will receive byes, while the other four will play knockout games.
