'A changed era': How North Korea is reporting the summit

"That's the only way I can see North Korea, as a very threatening state". Trump is pushing for complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearisation - considered the gold standard among arms control experts.

No is North Korea's minister of the People's Armed Forces. Pompeo held firm to Trump's position that sanctions will remain in place until North Korea denuclearizes - and said they would even increase if diplomatic discussions did not progress positively.

"This is more of a case of 'we'll believe it when we see it, ' rather than actually reacting", said Brad McMillan, chief investment officer for Commonwealth Financial in Waltham, Massachusetts.

Later in the morning, the meeting was expanded to include U.S. president's chief of staff, national security adviser and secretary of state - as well as members of the North Korean leader's entourage.

Kim is due to leave on Tuesday afternoon, a source involved in the planning of his visit said on Sunday.

Trump has also said he would raise the issue of Japanese citizens abducted by North Korea, after Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe lobbied him in a meeting in Washington last week. Kim spent the day mostly out of view - until he left his hotel for a late-night tour of Singapore sights, including the Flower Dome at Gardens by the Bay, billed as the world's biggest glass greenhouse.

Just a few months ago, Kim was an global pariah accused of ordering the killing of his uncle, a half-brother and scores of officials suspected of disloyalty.

Last week, Trump told reporters that it would be easy to tell if a deal was possible with Kim in the first minute of the meeting.

The president is now in Singapore, just hours away from his historic meeting with Kim.

Kim announced late past year that his country had obtained the ability to strike the United States with a nuclear weapon, and soon afterwards sought talks with South Korea on participating in the Winter Olympics.

It is not known who has been translating for Mr Trump at the Sentosa Hotel in Singapore.

Myong Sool Chang, editor of Boston Korea, a weekly newspaper and online news source that covers the Korean community in New England, said that he hopes the summit ends in a deal for North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons - a development that could bring economic benefits. It heralded the summit as part of a "changed era".

North Korea also wants security guarantees - a better relationship with the U.S.in order to end what it views as a hostile USA policy. Critics fear that Mr Trump is poorly prepared for the negotiations - while others say Mr Trump's quickfire approach has already produced results - including North Korea saying it is willing to consider denuclearising. The two will later be joined by officials and have lunch together.

Before that, the top story in North Korea was tremendously mundane by comparison: a full account of Mr Kim's trip to a seafood restaurant in Pyongyang.

"Trump is likely to declare the summit a victory irrespective of the outcome, but if the two sides fail to reach a common understanding of denuclearisation it will put at risk any process that the summit kicks off", he said.

"The process could be doomed before it begins". North Korea, however, has regularly received assistance from other nations, including Russia, Iran, and even South Korea and the United States.

But he has since lowered expectations, backing away from an original demand for North Korea's swift denuclearisation.

And most interestingly, Ari, she was the one who made a statement saying that Vice President Mike Pence was a political dummy when Pence seemed to suggest a few weeks ago a Libya-style end to the Kim regime if Kim didn't give in to USA demands.
