Mercedes-Benz faces massive recall in Europe

Mercedes-Benz faces massive recall in Europe

The emissions scandal has hung over the German auto industry since September 2015, when Volkswagen admitted to using software that could tell when a diesel vehicle was being tested and temporarily lower its toxic emissions to pass US regulations.

A court in Stuttgart, where Daimler is based, issued a search warrant against the company to investigate excess emissions on more than one million cars sold between 2008 and 2016 in Europe and the United States, according to German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung.

The affected vehicles include the Mercedes-Benz Vito delivery van and the Mercedes GLC 220d and C220d.

The German transport Ministry, the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA), has ordered the carmaker to recall 238,000 vehicles to rectify unauthorised diesel emissions cheating software. The ministry statement did not say whether those cars outside of Germany would be recalled.

Similar to Volkswagen's dieselgate scandal, it means these cars produce increased emission of harmful nitrogen oxides in the hands of customers compared to when they're tested for type approval by regulators.

Daimler boss Dieter Zetsche is set to meet with German Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer on Monday, after they met last week to discuss diesel emissions. AdBlue is an additive injected into the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) filter to reduce emissions.

According to our sister publication Autocar UK, the software is programmed to lower the amount of AdBlue being injected after a prescribed time. The company has already voluntarily recalled around 3 million vehicles in the European Union in 2017 to update the performance of their emissions controls.

Daimler head of communications Jorg Howe confirmed the recall, but the company has not specifically admitted wrongdoing. "Other countries should follow quickly". In certain situations, carmakers are permitted to switch off the SCR filter in diesel engines in the interests of engine longevity.

About eleven million cars worldwide were affected in that case.
