New iPhone said to ditch Lightning for USB-C in 2019

Before we go on, this is a rumour from the supply chain which suggests this drastic change in port type should happen on the new iPhone, in 2019. It's called USB Restricted Mode, and it prevents all data communications between an iPhone and a newly connected "accessory" - which is how the GrayKey shows up - after the iPhone has been locked for at least one hour.

When questioned by Reuters, Apple explicitly mentioned the protection of its customers in countries where law enforcement uses the aforementioned hacking tools - many of which have much looser human-rights protections than are present in the US. They also noted that criminals, spies and unscrupulous people often use the same techniques.

"We have the greatest respect for law enforcement, and we don't design our security improvements to frustrate their efforts to do their jobs", an Apple spokesperson said over email.

The feature previously appeared in the iOS 11.3 beta, making its way into the iOS 12 beta and now the company has confirmed that the security patch will make it into a final iOS release. But the company has been a target of some in law enforcement for rejecting efforts to allow easy access to iPhones. It also made a decision to simply alter the setting, a cruder way of preventing most of the potential access by unfriendly parties.
