North Korea's Kim visits Singapore's sky bar, gardens in surprise evening tour

In the hours before the summit began, Trump expressed optimism about prospects for the first-ever meeting of sitting United States and North Korean leaders, while Pompeo injected a note of caution whether Kim would prove to be honest about his willingness to denuclearise.

The White House said in a statement that discussions between officials from both sides were "ongoing and have moved more quickly than expected" before the 9am meeting on Singapore's Sentosa island.

Pompeo, addressing reporters ahead of the summit, said the USA was prepared to take action to provide North Korea with "sufficient certainty" that denuclearization "is not something that ends badly for them".

People crowded around poster stands at train stations around the capital, Pyongyang, to read the news, and gathered at noon on Monday in front of the city's main train station to watch a large screen display of images of Kim disembarking from the special Air China flight that took him to Singapore.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the preparatory talks between the two nations had moving quite rapidly.

Two North Korean officials, whose identity could not be confirmed, were seen returning from the shopping trip with bags from the NBC Stationery and Gifts shop.

The summit is scheduled to begin at 9am, the White House said. Kim is expected to leave Singapore soon after the lunch, sources told the Post.

Giving voice to the anticipation felt around the world as the meeting opened, South Korean President Moon Jae-in said Tuesday he "hardly slept" before the summit.

Some people were grumbling in the wealthy city-state because of traffic jams caused by the summit and the cost of hosting two leaders with massive security needs.

At the conclusion of the summit, President Trump will participate in a media availability before departing tomorrow at approximately 8 p.m. for the United States.

Boo Seung-chan, a research fellow at the Yonsei Institute for North Korean Studies in Seoul, was equally optimistic about the outcome.

In a tweet on June 1, the scholar said, "This is the only way to advance if we are to avoid catastrophic failure of diplomacy or catastrophic success, ie, offering up too much to get a deal in Singapore".

North Korea tends to keep its official government commentary on the pages of Rodong Sinmun, which routinely threatened nuclear annihilation of the American mainland previous year. "And the United States at the same time will achieve the dismantlement of the North's intercontinental ballistic missiles". "We are prepared to take what will be security assurances that are different, unique, than America's been willing to provide previously".

In his conference speech, he said North Korean leaders were driven by their desire to stay in power.

"Will that be enough?"

Mr Kim's selfie comes as part of a wider trend of world leaders getting in on the act. He continued to tweet angrily at Trudeau from Singapore, saying Monday "Fair Trade is now to be called Fool Trade if it is not Reciprocal". "They are the protagonists", Guterres told reporters.

But even before then, Trump and Kim could emerge from their meetings on Tuesday declaring a second day of meetings.

Richard Haass, president of Council on Foreign Relations, a New York-based think tank, said that Trump "appears to be embracing the idea of summit as the first step of gradual progress".
