George H.W. Bush becomes 1st US president to turn 94

Bush is now the first former U.S. President to reach that age.

"Happiest 94th to our Gamps, the anchor of our family, our compass", Hager wrote on her Instagram page on June 12 as her grandfather celebrated his 94birthday at the family's east coast summer home.

Two other former US presidents made it 93 - Republicans Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford.

Bush is the longest-living former president, a few months older than Jimmy Carter who will turn 94 October 1.

Son Neil Bush marked the event in a USA TODAY column that encourages Americans to volunteer.

Bush is celebrating at his home in Kennebunkport, Maine, as he has in years past, family spokesman Jim McGrath said.

"Dad also understood that government alone can not solve all of our community challenges and, from his first day as president, he actively supported volunteer-powered service initiatives", he wrote. Barbara Bush would've turned 93 last Friday.
