IAEA Welcomes Trump-Kim Joint Statement, Ready for Verification

Trudeau has offered support for Trump's discussions with Kim, but has steadfastly declined to weigh in on the president's fulsome praise of the North Korean leader and the intensifying verbal barbs thrown in his direction.

During the 13-minute conversation, Trump said that he trusts North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, who vowed to completely denuclearize his country, according to Trump.

"Kim Jong Un is saying he wants a brighter future with prosperity for his people", an American journalist began at the news conference after Trump's meeting with Kim. "Old prejudices and practices worked as obstacles on our way forward. We overcame all kinds of skepticism and speculation about this summit and I believe that this is good for the peace", Kim said. "Today, that the two countries' highest leaders can sit together and have equal talks, has important and positive meaning, and is creating a new history".

Trump and Kim signed a document on Tuesday stating that Pyongyang would work toward "complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".

In his meeting with reporters, Trump revealed a major concession about the joint-military exercises that the U.S. conducts with South Korea. "This was the first act in what they hope, and what all of us hope, will be a multistep process". It's going to start very quickly.

"The world is closely watching what will take place in Singapore in a few hours' time", Guterres told reporters hours ahead of the historic meeting. I said, instead of doing that, you could have the best hotels in the world. Meanwhile, there were were 400,000 Chinese soldiers in North Korea, says Charles K. Armstrong, a Korean Studies specialist at Columbia University, but they were kicked out in 1958. He pointed out that the Trump-Kim agreement does not define what denuclearization would mean.

There's no indication this date was set on objective... but the Singapore Summit happened on the same day one year ago when the University of Virginia student touched down in the USA soil in his native OH following more than a year in captivity in the hermit nation.

In their joint statement, the two leaders promised to "build a lasting and stable peace regime" on the Korean Peninsula.

The two leaders then took a post-lunch stroll in the courtyard of the hotel.

On the eve of the summit at Sentosa, the USA had offered "unique" security guarantees to North Korea in return for a "complete, verifiable and irreversible" denuclearisation.

Despite Trump's claim to have achieved something that eluded his predecessors, previous USA administrations extracted more specific commitments from Pyongyang, only to see them breached.
