Brexit: 'You are not alone', Juncker tells Irish government

Juncker made the comments in a joint press conference with Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar at the start of a two day visit to Dublin to discuss Brexit issues.

Amid an ongoing stand-off over how to maintain a free-flowing border post-Brexit, Mr Juncker assured Taoiseach Leo Varadkar that the European Union would not waver on what he made clear was a pivotal issue.

Guy Verhofstadt said the Government's position that the backstop of continuing United Kingdom alignment with the EU customs union would cease by the end of 2021 if no other solution was found left him "puzzled".

"We have been reassured over and over again that Ireland will not be left isolated here".

"We have Ireland backed by 26 member states and the commission - this will not change".

"I am strongly against any temptation to try to isolate Ireland".

Mark Malloch Brown, chair of the anti-Brexit campaign group Best for Britain. said: "The deputy prime minister of Ireland is echoing what we've known for a while now: that a failure to properly deal with the Irish border question will scupper any chance of deal with the EU".

After the meeting, Mr Juncker made clear that a resolution to the border issue was crucial to the withdrawal treaty.

The European Commission President urged the United Kingdom government to take "major steps" towards finding solutions on outstanding issues - most importantly how to guarantee there will be no hard border in Ireland.

Mr Juncker will meet Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, receive an honorary doctorate from the National University of Ireland and attend an official dinner hosted by Mr Varadkar in Dublin Castle. The U.K. wants the backstop to be time-limited but Varadkar said it could not have an "expiry date".

He added: "President Juncker and I are both very committed to the European project and the benefits that it brings to citizens across the Union".

Asked about wrangling within the UK Government over the customs issue, the Taoiseach said: "Internal British politics isn't my concern".

"My job is to represent my country, Ireland, and to do that as part of the European Union and we remain at the heart of the European Union".

The European Union is using the Republic of Ireland as a "bargaining chip" in the Brexit negotiations, the DUP has claimed.

"If we are to learn anything from it to realise that a lot of countries in Europe, including Ireland, are saying we are unhappy with the way democracy is happening in Europe in our name".

Mr Dodds said the plan put forward by Mr Juncker and Michel Barnier, to keep Northern Ireland in the single market, would cut the province off from its main market in Great Britain.

"We need more answers [from the U.K.]", he said, adding that, "we must prepare for no deal".

"We are also seriously anxious about the state of democracy in Europe and if we are to learn anything about Brexit and it certainly poses a challenge for this country but a positive challenge with solutions".
