Fiat 500 Spiaggina Concept Celebrates The Original Jolly Cinquecento

Fiat has taken the wraps off a special-edition 500, created to commemorate six decades since the canvas-topped 500 Jolly "Spiaggina" was launched in Italy.

It's been 60 years since the arrival of the so-called "Jolly Spiaggina", the first special series of the Fiat 500. To quote Fiat, it features "ultra-chic design touches and a lavish standard outfit". But wait, there's something else as well. Garage Italia and design firm Pininfarina have come together to design this little special series auto. Appearing on 4 July, 1957 just one year after the launch of the Fiat 500 proper, the Spiaggina was built by Carrozzeria Ghia off the Fiat 500, and later also on the Giardiniera version, it was produced from 1958 to 1965 and sold in Europe, the United States and even South Africa. Limited to 1,958 examples and exclusively available as a convertible based on the 500C, the auto features an ivory soft top, white belt liner, Volare Blue paintwork, and 16-inch wheels. The retro effect is provided by special floor mats and a steering wheel with the same vintage Fiat emblem. It is available with a 1.2-litre 69PS and a 1.0-litre 85PS TwinAir petrol engine.

Finished in a mix of Sky Blue and Pearl White, the showcar's roof has been removed (just like the original Spiaggina) and the rear passenger space transformed into a compartment complete with a built-in "shower". The 500 Jolly has a little 22PS air-cooled, two-cylinder heart and has a top speed of 105 kmph.

Hosepipe ban extended to Kilkenny as drought conditions continue
Thames Water has requested that customers keep an eye on how much water they use, and try to limit their usage. It's looking like the hosepipe ban is set to be rolled out across all of Ireland as the heatwave continues.

The show vehicle sees its roof completely removed and replaced with a roll bar; the rear seats removed and a built-in showerhead nozzle installed; the floors and trunk trimmed in cork; the front seats replaced by a custom bench seat; and, optionally, with its windshield cut down.

The Fiat 500 is one of those cars we wish we could see more of on our roads, but given the absence of a distributor, we'll have to make do online. What's even sweeter is that it will be available with all the engine options now available on the Fiat 500 range, that includes the Abarth as well.

Luca Napolitano, Head of EMEA Fiat and Abarth brands, explains the project as follows: "The new "Spiaggina '58" is our birthday gift to 500 for its birthday and the 60th anniversary of the "spiaggina".
