"As a result, the new NHC intensity forecast calls for little change in strength during the next 24-36 [hours], but predicts steady weakening after that time".

According to N.H.C.'s 5:00 p.m. advisory, the center of Hurricane Beryl was located near latitude 10.6 North, longitude 47.8 West. Beryl is moving toward the west near 15 miles per hour (24 km/h).

Beryl is moving towards the west-northwest near 14 miles per hour or 22 km/h. a west-northwestward motion with some increase in forward speed is expected during the next few days.

Forecasters said the storm is expected to dump heavy rain across islands including Dominica and Puerto Rico, which could also be hit with winds of more than to 40 miles per hour and flooding.

Tropical Storm Beryl formed as a tropical depression on Thursday, July 5.

With tropical-storm-force winds extending out to 35 miles from the center of circulation and hurricane-force winds extending only ten miles out, Beryl is very compact.

The center of Beryl is now located near latitude 10.6 North, longitude 47.8 West.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, and peaks from mid-August to late-October. How these factors come into balance will be crucial in determining how strong Beryl is when it moves through the Lesser Antilles Sunday afternoon into Sunday night.

Latest forecast track for Beryl from the NHC.

The path of the relatively tiny Hurricane Beryl is now tracking westwards through the Atlantic in the general direction of Puerto Rico.

Meantime, forecasters are also keeping an eye on a weather system off the coast of North Carolina that could turn into a tropical depression over the weekend. The depression is expected to become a tropical storm by Sunday.

However, the emergence of Beryl serves as a timely reminder that, despite the long-term forecast of much less activity this season than first believed, storms are always unpredictable. Beryl will continue to track westward through an environment of warm water and low wind shear which is favorable for additional strengthening.

Officials said they will open 424 shelters across Puerto Rico as a preventive measure and urged people to monitor the storm's progress.

Meteorologist Odalys Martinez said in a phone interview that conditions would deteriorate late Sunday, with up to 3 inches (7.62 centimetres) of rain possible.
