Tropical depression forms over central Atlantic

Sustained winds are near 30 miles per hour with higher gusts and the depression is forecast to become Tropical Storm Chris either today or tomorrow, with gradual strengthening expected through Monday when it could reach hurricane strength well offshore. The storm had sustained winds of 80 mph, and hurricane-force winds extend 10 miles from the center and tropical storm-force winds 35 miles from the center.

The depression could become a tropical storm later today or Friday. After which, it is forecast to become an open trough East of the Lesser Antilles.

Beryl is now expected to pass near Dominica and the French Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique early Monday as a tropical wave and then continue south of Puerto Rico.

Earlier this week, Colorado State University updated its forecast for the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season, lowering the number of named storms expected to 11, 4 hurricanes and 1 major hurricane. Beryl is expected to weaken starting on Sunday or Monday.

According to meteorologists, the maximum wind speed is 65 km/h.

Tropical depression Tropical Depression 3 is located 195 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, Saturday morning and is moving north-northwest at 6 mph. On the forecast track, the centre of Beryl will remain east of the Lesser Antilles through Sunday.

Following Tropical Storm Alberto, which developed during Memorial Day weekend, there were no tropical storms over the Atlantic basin during June for the first time since 2014, AccuWeather reported.

Beryl is not the only item of note in the tropics as we wrap up the first week of July.
