Death Sentence to Nirbhaya rapists confirmed by Supreme Court

December 19, 2012: The gang rape and near-fatal beating of the 23-year-old student triggers outrage and anger across the country as people demand stringent and swift punishment against those attacking women, including a proposal to make rapists eligible for the death penalty.Meanwhile, the Delhi police detain fifth person, Akshay Thakur, in Bihar in connection with the rape and assault.

Senior Supreme Court lawyer, Vrinda Grover, said that she was "not at all convinced that it [the verdict] will be a deterrent this time around". The top court was asked to reconsider its own ruling in a review plea; the convicts are left with one more legal option of challenging their sentence before they appeal to the President for mercy. Another convict, Ram Singh, allegedly committed suicide in his cell in Tihar jail.

The six gang raped and tortured the woman with an iron bar as the bus drove loops through the Indian capital.

Singh, lawyer of two convicts, Pawan and Vinay told ANI he is hopeful that his clients would get justice. After nearly two weeks, the victim succumbed to her injuries in a Singapore hospital where she was flown in a last ditch bid to save her life. Among the guilty the under 18 man was sent to juvenile prison and released after three years while Ram Singh killed himself in prison.

The apex court also said that these three convicts were heard elaborately during the stage of their appeal against the Delhi High Court's judgement and no case has been made out by them for review of the apex court's verdict upholding the death penalty, quoted the news agency. Akshay Kumar Singh, the fourth convict, had not filed a review plea. He walked out of a correction home in December 2015 after spending three years there.
