Environment Canada issues statement for the Maritimes about Tropical Storm Chris

A third named Atlantic storm that formed off the North Carolina coast early on Sunday was forecast to become a hurricane on Monday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said, while Tropical Storm Beryl looked set to threaten Puerto Rico.

Chris has the potential to strengthen into a hurricane because of warm sea surface temperatures and favourable winds.

As of Sunday evening, Chris was about 180 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, with maximum sustained winds of about 50 mph.

At 11a.m. Tropical Storm Beryl was located about 130 miles or 210 kilometres northeast of Barbados. It wasn't projected to directly threaten land over the next few days, though forecasters said it could kick up unsafe surf and rip tides.

No coastal watches or warnings are in effect, but forecasters say swells along the coasts of North Carolina and the mid-Atlantic states could produce risky surf and rip current conditions.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles from the center.

A disorganized Tropical Storm Beryl was closing in on the chain of islands that form the outer perimeter of the Caribbean, where it was expected to bring tropical storm conditions to the islands of Guadeloupe and Dominica on Sunday night.

It however warned that "pockets of moderate to heavy showers and occasional gusty winds are still possible" with rainfall accumulations of one to two inches with isolated higher amounts.

It is said Beryl will "degenerate into a trough of low pressure" as it moves into the eastern caribbean sea by Monday.

Tropical storm watches are in effect for Martinique, St. Martin, St. Barthelemy, Saba, St. Eustatius and St. Maarten.

Those living near Puerto Rico's south coast were wary of the rain forecast, since they were the first ones hit by Maria and saw some of the biggest damage.

Puerto Rico, which was devastated by Hurricane Maria in September, remains under a state of emergency.
