Fernando Hierro steps down from Spain role

Hierro, 50, was sensationally appointed Spain coach on the eve of the tournament, after previous boss Julen Lopetegui was sacked for agreeing to take the Real Madrid job.

"After walking many kilometres side by side, the Spanish Football Federation and Fernando Hierro have brought their relationship to an end following the conclusion of Spain's campaign at the World Cup in Russia", the RFEF said.

The Spanish FA thanked Hierro for his short spell in charge in a statement published on their official website.
