Tropical Storm Chris set to become hurricane Monday, Beryl threatens Puerto Rico

"Swells generated by Chris are expected to increase and affect portions of the coasts of North Carolina and the mid-Atlantic states into early next week", the advisory said, adding that some of the resulting conditions could be life-threatening.

"It is going to meander a bit for the next 24 hours off the Carolina coast, and then it's expected to start heading northeast", Kim Buttrick, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service said.

The tropical storm watch for Barbados has been discontinued as Beryl "no longer poses a direct threat".

It however warned that "pockets of moderate to heavy showers and occasional gusty winds are still possible" with rainfall accumulations of one to two inches with isolated higher amounts. Tropical storms can have winds reaching 73 miles per hour.

Tropical storm-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles from the centre but forecasters anticipate Beryl to gradually weaken during the next 36 hours.

While Chris is expected to become a hurricane, it will stay offshore and head to sea, according to the storm center.

While Tropical Storm Chris is not expected to directly impact land over the next few days, rough surf and risky rip currents will continue to impact coastal areas of the Carolinas, mid-Atlantic and the Northeast through much of this week.

"On the forecast track, the center of Beryl or its remnants will approach the Lesser Antilles today, cross the island chain tonight, and move near or south of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico on Monday", the advisory said.
