Defend: When outdoors, use an insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, 2-undecanone, or IR3535 and reapply according to label directions.

Cover exposed skin with long trousers and long-sleeved shirts whenever possible.

Dawn and Dusk: Protect yourself all day and night, and wear repellent outdoors during these prime times for mosquito activity.

Remove standing water in and around homes, including in trash cans, toys, tires, flower pots and any other containers so mosquitoes can't lay their eggs.

West Nile virus is transmitted to humans via a mosquito bite and can lead to serious illness, though most people infected have no symptoms, the BPHC said.

Last year, more than 4,000 pools of up to 50 mosquitoes were tested and 89 pools tested positive for the virus.

West Nile Virus can lead to a potentially deadly form of encephalitis. "Just one bite from an infected mosquito could change your future". Common symptoms include fever, nausea, headache and muscle ache. People older than 50 and individuals with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for severe illness from West Nile virus.
