8 out of 13 now rescued from Thailand cave

The members of the "Wild Boars" team, aged between 12 and 16, were guided to safety through the twisting, submerged passages of the Tham Luang cave by a team of worldwide expert divers flanked by Thai Navy SEALs over two days in a meticulously planned operation.

"Hooyah", the Thai Navy SEALs, who have played a crucial role in the against-the-odds operation, said in a Facebook post as they announced that a total of 8 members of the "Wild Boars" football team had been rescued on Sunday and Monday.

The four boys who were rescued on Sunday appeared to be in good health, Thai officials said, but were undergoing a battery of medical tests in the hospital to ensure they were free from disease and infection.

"All eight rescued boys today are in good health, none have a fever", Jesada Chokedamrongsuk, permanent secretary of the ministry of public health, told a news conference in Chiang Rai in northern Thailand.

The search and rescue operation has riveted people in Thailand and internationally, with journalists from across the globe traveling to this town along the border with Myanmar to report on the ordeal.

A BCRC spokesman said: "The UK divers are part of the core team, so they will be actively involved and that will include escorting each child out through the flooded passage".

The first group of four boys to be rescued were led out of the cave by an worldwide team of rescue divers on Sunday.

Heavy monsoon rains lashed the mountainous Chiang Rai region, where the Tham Luang Nang Non cave is situated, for several hours overnight on Sunday.

Ambulances and a helicopter were seen rushing from the cave site on Monday.

Extracting everyone could take up to four days, but the initial success has raised hopes that could be done.

As of Tuesday, four other team members and their 25-year-old assistant coach are still stranded in the cave.

Monday's rescue effort took about nine hours, two fewer than the day before, in a sign of growing confidence and expertise. More worrying, however, oxygen levels in the cave were falling.
