Deputies later apprehended Crowley at the Hot Springs area, and they say he made statements indicating that the baby was buried somewhere in the mountains, according to the sheriff's office.

The sheriff's office became aware that a baby might be buried somewhere in a mountainous area after they received a call Saturday night about a man acting strangely in the Lolo Hot Springs area, according to a Facebook post by the sheriff's department.

Sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene to find he had fled, but established that Crowley had been caring for a young child who had been missing for several hours.

"When deputies tried to interview him, he appeared to be under the influence of drugs and was not making sense to the officers", she said.

That sparked a six hour search, which ended when a sheriff's deputy heard a cry.

A missing 5-month-old baby boy - buried under sticks and debris for nine hours in the Montana mountains - was rescued alive after being abandoned Saturday night in a wet and soiled onesie. They took the infant to a hospital and say the baby is in good condition.

Police have charged 32-year-old Francis Crowley with criminal endangerment, and more charges are expected, reports the Missoulian. The deputy followed that faint sound until he found the baby, who was buried under sticks and debris while face down, according to the post.

Missoula County Search and Rescue and U.S. Forest Service and Bureau officers along with the Bureau of Land Management, the Montana Highway Patrol, and additional deputies all responded to take part in a ground search.

The nature of Crowley's relationship to the baby was not immediately clear. The baby was unattended and in the cold (about 46 degrees) for at least nine hours.

The baby has minor scrapes and bruises, according to CNN affiliate KPAX-TV, but remains in good condition.
